Photography lighting has to work for a fraction of a second. Cinema lighting has to hold up, consistently, for as long as the scene takes to shoot.
Why It’s a Different Discipline
A flash only needs to fire correctly once per frame. A cinema light needs to stay on, stay color-consistent, and stay exactly where it’s set for a take that might run five minutes and get shot a dozen times. That constraint shapes almost everything about how cinema fixtures are built — they run continuously, they’re rated for sustained output, and color accuracy is judged over the full duration of a scene, not a single flash pop.
Fresnels and Tungsten
The classic fixture, named for its distinctive lens, focuses light into a controllable beam that can be spotted down tight or spread out wide with a simple adjustment. Traditional tungsten fresnels run hot and draw serious power, but the quality and shape of light they produce is still the reference point new fixtures get compared to — cinematographers reach for them constantly for classic, shapeable key lighting on narrative sets and theatrical-style setups where a hard, directional beam is exactly what the scene calls for.
HMIs
HMIs are daylight-balanced, extremely powerful, and efficient enough to punch sunlight-level output through a window from outside a building. That makes them the standard choice any time a shoot needs to override or supplement natural daylight indoors, or light a large exterior area at night with something that reads as convincing moonlight or daylight. They need a ballast to run and take a moment to strike and restrike, but for raw output-per-watt, they’re still hard to beat.
LED Panels
LED fixtures have taken over a huge share of the market because they’re efficient, run cool, and increasingly offer tunable color temperature and even full RGB control from a single fixture. Documentary crews and interview setups favor them for exactly that flexibility — dial in a color temperature to match existing room light, adjust output on the fly, and skip carrying a box of gels. They’re a natural fit anywhere a small crew needs to move fast and adapt to mixed lighting conditions on location.
Practicals and Space Lights
Practicals are light sources that appear within the frame itself — a lamp, a window, a sign — sometimes swapped for a film-friendly bulb to control color and output, used whenever a scene needs a visible light source that feels motivated by the environment rather than an obviously external fixture. Space lights are large, soft, balloon-like fixtures that flood an entire set with even, shadowless light, common on soundstage builds where a big, soft top light needs to cover a wide area without hard shadows falling across multiple camera angles.
Power and Distribution
None of this runs on a household outlet for long. Cinema lighting packages need real power planning — distro boxes, generators, and an understanding of what a location’s electrical system can actually handle before a truck full of fixtures shows up and trips every breaker in the building.
