Sticks & Mounts: Mitchell, Bowl, and Flat Base Explained

Sticks, Mitchell mounts, bowl sizes, and the flat base: how a head actually attaches to its legs

Introduction

On a professional set, “the tripod” is really two separate pieces of equipment that happen to get talked about as one: the legs, usually just called sticks, and the head that bolts to the top of them. They’re sold separately, rented separately, and matched to each other through a small number of standardized mounts. Getting that mount wrong, showing up with 100mm bowl legs and a Mitchell-mount head, is one of the more common and entirely avoidable prep mistakes on a shoot, so it’s worth knowing the standards cold.

Tripod Legs (Sticks)

Standard sticks are three adjustable legs that set the height and footprint of the whole support, with a spreader (or spider) connecting them near the bottom to keep them from splaying out under load. Section count and leg lock type affect how fast a crew can set up and how stable the result is on uneven ground. Baby legs are a shorter version of the same thing, used for low angles, and a hi-hat is shorter still, a simple mounting plate that sits close to the floor for a near-ground-level shot. A low hat splits the difference between baby legs and a hi-hat.

A standard package on most professional shoots includes a set of standard legs, a set of baby legs, at least one ground spreader, a hi-hat, and a low hat, which covers the large majority of height and angle requirements without needing anything specialized.


The Mitchell Mount

The Mitchell mount is a flat platform with a hole in the center for a tie-down bolt and a keyed slot that stops the head from rotating relative to the legs. It’s named after the Mitchell Camera Corporation, whose camera bases set the format decades ago, and it remains the standard on most professional dollies, jibs, sliders, and heavy-duty sticks. It’s the sturdiest and lowest-profile mounting option, and it adapts easily to other equipment, but leveling it takes more work than a bowl mount does, since there’s no built-in play to rock the head into level before locking it down.


Bowl Mounts

A bowl mount replaces the flat Mitchell platform with a concave bowl that the base of the head sits in. To level the shot, an operator just loosens the tie-down, rocks the head to the desired position inside the bowl, and tightens it back down, which is much faster than adjusting three individual legs to get a flat base level. The tradeoff is that a bowl mount can slip if the tie-down isn’t tight enough or if the payload exceeds what the bowl is rated for.

The rule of thumb is straightforward: the heavier the camera package, the larger the bowl should be. Heads built around a bowl mount often ship with, or can be paired with, an adapter that converts the bowl base to Mitchell, which makes it possible to move the same head between sticks, a dolly, or a jib without buying a second head.


The Flat Base Mount

The flat base mount is the simplest of the three: a flat plate with a male thread on the side that faces the camera or head, and a female thread on the side that faces the legs. It shows up mostly on smaller, budget-oriented fluid heads built for lightweight mirrorless or DSLR packages. It isn’t seen often on higher-end professional sets, but it can deliver genuinely smooth pans and tilts at a fraction of the cost of a Mitchell or bowl system, which makes it a reasonable choice for solo shooters and smaller productions.


Matching Legs, Mounts, and Heads

Because heads and legs are sold independently, the mount is the thing that actually has to match, not the brand. A 150mm bowl head will not sit in a 100mm bowl, and a Mitchell-mount head needs either Mitchell legs or an adapter to sit on a bowl base. Before a shoot, it’s worth confirming three things: the mount type and size on the legs being used, the mount type and size on the head being used, and whether an adapter plate is needed to bridge the two. This is a five-minute check during prep that saves a much longer scramble on set.

Sticks and mounts don’t get much attention in a gear list next to cameras and lenses, but a mismatched mount is one of the fastest ways to lose real time on a set. Mitchell is the sturdy, adaptable standard for heavier professional gear; bowl mounts trade a bit of stability for much faster leveling, in three common sizes matched to payload; and the flat base covers lightweight builds on a budget. Knowing which is which, and confirming the match before the truck leaves for location, is a small piece of prep that pays for itself every time.
