A manual slider is exactly what it sounds like: the operator pushes the camera along the rail by hand, controlling speed and smoothness through feel alone. It’s lightweight, inexpensive, and needs no setup beyond leveling the rail, which makes it the default choice for run-and-gun and solo work.
A motorized slider uses a small motor, usually controlled by an app or a dedicated controller, to move the camera at a precise, repeatable speed. That precision matters most for two things: producing a move so slow and smooth it would be nearly impossible to replicate by hand, and time-lapse or motion-control work, where the exact same move might need to repeat multiple times or execute over a much longer duration than a human operator could sustain. Motorized sliders cost more and add a battery and a motor to carry, which is the tradeoff for that added control.
Slider vs Dolly
A slider and a dolly do a related job at very different scales. A slider covers a few feet of travel and one or two operators can carry and set it up in minutes. A dolly can carry a full camera package, an operator, and sometimes a focus puller, and travel much longer distances, but it needs a wheeled base or a section of track, more crew, and considerably more setup time. On a budget or a fast-moving shoot, a slider is often the more realistic option even when a dolly would technically produce a similar move on a larger scale.
