Fresnels & Tungsten Lighting Explained

Tungsten and HMI still earn their place on sets that have gone almost entirely LED

Introduction

Fresnel refers to the lens, not the light source: a stepped, concentric lens (invented for lighthouses in the 1820s by Augustin-Jean Fresnel) that focuses a light source into an adjustable beam, from a wide flood to a tight spot, by moving the bulb closer to or further from the lens. Tungsten is the traditional light source paired with that lens, an incandescent bulb burning at roughly 3200K. Together, the tungsten fresnel was the standard cinema light for most of the 20th century, and it’s still on trucks today for reasons that have nothing to do with nostalgia.

Why Tungsten Still Gets Used

Tungsten light has a continuous, full spectrum with excellent color rendering, none of the spiky output some LED and fluorescent sources can produce, which is why skin tones under tungsten still look reliably natural. It dims smoothly from 0 to 100 percent using a simple variable resistor, with no risk of flicker at any frame rate. The tradeoff is heat and power draw: a tungsten fixture throws off significant heat and pulls a lot of current for its output, and as it’s dimmed, its color temperature drifts warmer, which needs to be accounted for or corrected with gel.


The Fresnel Lens Itself

The stepped fresnel lens is what gives these fixtures their signature soft-edged, adjustable beam, and the same lens design gets paired with other sources too, HMI and even some LED fixtures use fresnel optics for the same adjustable spot-to-flood control. Spinning the focus knob moves the bulb relative to the lens: closer produces a wider flood, farther produces a tighter spot. That mechanical simplicity is part of why fresnels have stayed in continuous production for so long with relatively little redesign.


Where Tungsten Fits Today

On modern sets, tungsten fresnels get reached for when color rendering needs to be as clean as possible, when a production is already wired for tungsten power distribution, or simply because a gaffer trusts a specific fixture’s output and dimming behavior. They’ve lost significant ground to LED for anything battery-powered, run-and-gun, or heat-sensitive, but on a well-powered stage or a production with an established tungsten package, they remain a completely valid, sometimes preferred, choice.

A tungsten fresnel isn’t a relic, it’s a specific tool with specific strengths: clean color rendering, flicker-free dimming, and a beam that’s easy to shape. LED has taken over a lot of its former territory on portability and efficiency, but wherever color accuracy and simple, reliable dimming matter most, tungsten still holds its ground.
