Why Long Power Runs Need a Voltage Drop Check
Every foot of cable has resistance, and that resistance eats into the voltage that actually reaches your light, monitor, or camera accessory at the end of a long run. Undersized cable on a long DC run can cause dimming, flicker, or a device that simply won’t power on — even though the source voltage measures correctly at the supply.
Why It’s a Round-Trip Calculation
Current has to travel down the cable to the load and back through the return conductor, so the resistance of the full circuit is double the one-way cable length. This tool accounts for that automatically — enter the one-way distance to the device and it calculates the round-trip drop correctly.
Reading the Assessment
A voltage drop under 3% is generally considered safe for sensitive equipment. Between 3% and 5% is usually acceptable but worth watching, especially for dimmable LED fixtures that are sensitive to supply voltage. Above 5%, expect visible dimming or flicker, and above 10%, some devices may fail to power on at all — at that point, a heavier gauge cable or a shorter run is worth the tradeoff.
