Step-Up vs. Step-Down: Why Direction Matters
A step-up ring mounts a larger filter onto a smaller lens thread, and a step-down ring does the opposite. Most photographers standardize on one larger filter size and use step-up rings across their kit, because that direction carries far less risk of the filter’s edge cutting into the frame. Step-down rings are the riskier direction: squeezing a smaller filter onto a larger lens thread can visibly vignette, especially on wide-angle lenses, because the filter’s clear aperture may not be large enough to clear the lens’s full field of view.
Reading the Adapter Ratio
The adapter ratio is simply the larger thread size divided by the smaller one. For step-up rings, a modest ratio (roughly under 1.4x) is usually safe on most focal lengths, though very wide lenses can still show mechanical vignetting from a thick step-up ring stack. For step-down rings, even a small ratio can cause visible corner darkening on wide lenses, since you’re constraining the front element’s usable aperture.
Building a Filter Kit Around One Size
A common approach is to buy filters (ND, polarizer, etc.) in the largest thread size among your lenses, then use step-up rings for every smaller lens. This keeps the total number of filters you need to own to a minimum, while staying on the lower-risk step-up side of the equation.
