What a Lighting Ratio Actually Describes

A lighting ratio compares how much brighter your key light is than your fill light, expressed as a ratio like 4:1 or in stops. It’s one of the most direct ways to control contrast and mood in a portrait or scene — a low ratio (close to 1:1) looks flat and even, while a high ratio (8:1 or more) creates deep shadows and a dramatic, high-contrast look.

Two Ways to Measure It

The most accurate method is metering each light individually with an incident meter (with the other light turned off) and comparing the f-stop readings. If you don’t have a meter, you can estimate the ratio from the relative distances of two identical fixtures using the inverse-square law — light falls off with the square of distance, so moving a fill light twice as far from the subject as the key cuts its effective output to a quarter, a 4:1 ratio.

Reading the Stops Difference

Every full stop of difference between key and fill doubles the ratio: 1 stop is 2:1, 2 stops is 4:1, 3 stops is 8:1, and so on. Most portrait work sits somewhere between 2:1 and 4:1 for a natural but shaped look, while dramatic or moody lighting often pushes past 8:1.
