Understanding Crop Factor and Sensor Size
Every digital camera sensor has a physical size, and that size directly determines how much of the scene in front of your lens actually gets captured. A 50mm lens produces the exact same optical projection regardless of which camera it’s mounted on — what changes is how much of that projected image circle your sensor captures. A larger sensor captures a wider slice of the image circle; a smaller sensor crops into the middle of it, which is where the term “crop factor” comes from.
Crop factor is simply the ratio between a sensor’s diagonal measurement and the 35mm full-frame diagonal (43.3mm). A Micro Four Thirds sensor, at roughly half the diagonal of full frame, has a crop factor of 2.0×. An APS-C sensor, common in most consumer mirrorless and DSLR cameras, sits between 1.5× and 1.6× depending on the manufacturer. Medium format sensors are larger than full frame, so their crop factor is actually less than 1.0× — they capture more of the image circle, not less.
This matters most when you’re trying to predict how a lens will frame a shot, or when you’re comparing lenses across different camera systems. A 35mm lens is a classic street-photography focal length on full frame, but the same 35mm lens on a Micro Four Thirds camera frames like a 70mm portrait lens — useful to know before you buy, not after.
Crop factor also affects the full-frame-equivalent aperture, which is a separate concept from exposure. Your actual exposure (how bright the image is) depends only on the true f-number, ISO, and shutter speed — crop factor doesn’t change that. What it does affect is depth of field and total light-gathering compared to a full-frame system: an f/2.8 lens on Micro Four Thirds produces roughly the same depth of field and low-light noise characteristics as an f/5.6 lens would on full frame, because of the sensor size difference, not because the lens itself is transmitting less light.
