Film Cameras
Film never actually disappeared — it just became a deliberate choice rather than the default. Shooting film means no chimping the screen after every frame, a hard limit on how many shots you get per roll, and a distinct color and grain response that digital sensors still get imitated rather than matched. Film cameras show up with students learning exposure fundamentals the slow way, fine art photographers chasing a specific look, and shooters who simply enjoy a more disciplined, unhurried process.
What Actually Changes Between Bodies
Sensor size is the biggest variable, and it’s not just about megapixels. A larger sensor gathers more light per pixel, which usually means cleaner images in dim conditions and a shallower depth of field at the same aperture. Autofocus system matters just as much day to day — a camera that hunts for focus will lose you the shot no matter how good the sensor is. Buy the body that gets out of your way, and spend the rest of the budget on glass.
