What Filters Actually Do That Editing Can’t
It’s tempting to think filters are obsolete now that editing software can fake almost any color grade. Most color effects, sure. But a filter that physically blocks or redirects light before it hits the sensor changes what information actually gets recorded — and you can’t recover detail in a blown-out sky in post if the sensor never captured it in the first place. That’s the real argument for keeping a few filters in the bag.
ND Filters
Neutral density filters cut the amount of light reaching the sensor without changing color, which lets you use a slower shutter speed or wider aperture in bright conditions than you’d normally be able to. Landscape photographers use them to turn a waterfall or a river into something silky at high noon, portrait photographers use them to shoot wide open in direct sun without blowing out the exposure, and video shooters use them constantly just to keep a cinematic shutter angle while filming outdoors in daylight. They come in fixed strengths or variable versions that dial in like a wheel, trading a bit of optical quality for convenience.
Polarizers
A circular polarizer cuts reflections and glare off water, glass, and foliage, and deepens blue skies in the process — an effect that’s genuinely hard to replicate convincingly in editing. Landscape photographers use them to see through the surface of a lake instead of just reflecting the sky, architecture photographers use them to cut glare off windows, and outdoor portrait photographers use them to saturate a sky without touching the subject’s skin tone. Rotate the front element and watch the effect change in real time through the viewfinder — one of the few filters where you can see exactly what you’re paying for before you buy it.
UV and Protection Filters
UV filters were originally designed to correct a real problem with film stock’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light. On digital sensors that correction is mostly unnecessary, so today a clear or UV filter’s main job is protecting the front element of an expensive lens from scratches, dust, and salt spray at the beach or on a boat. A low-quality version can measurably soften an otherwise sharp lens, so if a filter’s only job is protection, it’s worth buying a genuinely good one.
Graduated ND Filters
A graduated ND darkens half the frame and leaves the other half untouched, which is exactly what a landscape photographer needs at sunrise or sunset when the sky is several stops brighter than the ground. Instead of stacking multiple exposures together in post, a graduated filter balances the scene in a single frame, right at the moment of capture.
Filter Mounting Systems
Screw-on filters thread directly onto the front of a lens — simple, cheap, and limited to whatever thread size that specific lens uses. Square and rectangular filter systems hold larger filters in a bracket that adapts across multiple lenses, so one set of filters can move between an entire kit instead of needing a different size for each one. That’s the same basic idea behind a cinema matte box, just scaled down and built for stills work.
