What FIZ Actually Stands For
FIZ is short for Focus, Iris, Zoom — the three lens functions a camera assistant needs to control precisely and repeatably during a take. A FIZ controller is the hand unit that does that job remotely, usually wireless, sending commands to small motors clamped onto the lens barrel itself. It’s the difference between an assistant standing at the lens twisting a ring by hand and an assistant standing off to the side, watching a monitor, making tiny adjustments no one on set even notices.
Why Remote Control Matters
On a handheld or gimbal shot, there’s often no room for a first AC to physically reach the lens at all — the whole point of a gimbal is that it moves freely through space. FIZ solves that by putting focus, iris, and zoom control in the operator’s hands from a distance, over radio frequency, with enough precision to hit a focus mark to the millimeter. It’s also what makes remote-head, crane, and drone cinematography possible, since the camera itself might be twenty feet in the air or hanging off a cable with nobody standing next to it.
The Actual Hardware
A full FIZ setup has three pieces: motors that physically turn the lens rings, a receiver mounted on the rig that talks to those motors, and the hand unit itself, which usually has three separate control wheels or knobs, one per function. Focus is the one that gets the obsessive attention, marked with hard stops and often run off a wheel calibrated to match the lens’s actual focus throw, so a first AC can pull focus with the same muscle memory shot after shot.
Mechanical Follow Focus
Before — and often alongside — wireless FIZ, there’s the mechanical follow focus: a geared wheel clamped directly onto the lens and turned by hand with a small knob or cable. It’s cheap, simple, and doesn’t need batteries or a radio link, which makes it a natural fit for low-budget shoots, documentary setups, or any shot where the AC can physically stand right next to the camera and reach the wheel directly.
Wireless FIZ Systems
Wireless FIZ takes that same geared-wheel idea and moves the control point away from the lens entirely, which is what makes gimbal work, crane shots, drone cinematography, and remote-head setups possible in the first place. It’s a bigger investment and takes longer to rig than a basic follow focus, but on any production where the camera moves through space without an operator standing beside it, it’s the only practical option.
Who’s Actually Running This
On a proper set, the first assistant camera pulls focus using the FIZ hand unit while watching a monitor, not the actual lens. It’s a genuinely difficult, high-pressure job — missing focus on a hero take is one of the more expensive mistakes anyone on a film crew can make, which is exactly why good 1st ACs are paid well and trusted completely.
