Why Diopter Math Is an Estimate, Not an Exact Answer
A diopter, or close-up filter, screws onto the front of a lens like any other filter and adds its own optical power to the system. Because it threads on just a few millimeters from the front element, treating it as if it sits right at the lens is a reasonable approximation — but it’s still an approximation, since the exact location of a compound lens’s front principal plane isn’t something manufacturers publish. This tool uses the standard thin-lens combination formula photographers and filter makers rely on, and gives you a close-focus working range and magnification estimate rather than an exact prediction.
How the Working Range Is Calculated
Adding a diopter doesn’t change how the lens itself focuses — it changes what subject distance produces a sharp image at each of the lens’s existing focus positions. Racking the lens to infinity with the diopter attached gives the farthest edge of your new close-focus range, while racking it to its own normal closest focus gives the nearest edge. The result is a working range: move closer than the near limit or farther than the far limit and the diopter won’t hold focus at all.
Why the “Native Closest Focus” Number Matters
Lens spec sheets list minimum focus distance measured from the camera’s sensor plane, not the front of the lens — so the number printed on the lens or in the manual will overstate the true working distance from the front element. For the most accurate estimate, measure roughly from the front of the lens to a subject when the lens is set to its closest native focus, rather than relying on the spec sheet figure directly.
