What This Loan Calculator Actually Solves

A new camera body, cinema lens, or lighting package rarely gets bought in cash. Most gear over a few hundred dollars ends up on some kind of financing plan — a 0% promo plan from a camera retailer, a personal loan, or a store credit card — and the sticker price on the shelf almost never matches what you’ll actually pay by the time the loan is paid off. This calculator runs the same amortization math a lender uses internally, so you can see the real monthly payment, the total interest, and the true total cost before you sign anything.

It works exactly like any general-purpose equipment financing or personal loan calculator — enter a price, a down payment, an APR, and a term, and it returns the numbers — but it’s tuned around the financing offers photographers and filmmakers actually encounter: 0% promotional plans, typical retailer APR tiers, and common 6–60 month repayment terms.

How the Math Works

The calculator applies the standard amortizing loan formula: it takes the financed principal (price plus any sales tax, minus your down payment) and spreads it across the loan term at your monthly interest rate, so each payment is identical and the loan reaches exactly zero on the final month. If the APR is 0%, it simply divides the principal evenly across the term. From there it totals every payment to show total interest paid and the true total cost of the purchase, plus what percentage of the original price that interest adds on top.

Why the APR Tier Matters So Much

The gap between a 0% promotional plan and a 24.99% store card on the same $3,500 camera body can mean paying several hundred dollars more for the exact same gear, just spread over the same number of months. Toggling the APR preset and term length side by side is the fastest way to see whether a “no interest for 12 months” offer is actually better than paying cash and financing the rest at a lower rate elsewhere, or whether a longer term is quietly costing you more in total interest even though the monthly payment looks smaller.

This tool is especially useful for:

  • Photographers and filmmakers comparing camera store financing offers before checkout.
  • Freelancers and small studios budgeting monthly cash flow for a new gear purchase.
  • Anyone financing equipment — cameras, computers, tools, appliances — who wants the real total cost, not just the monthly payment.

This calculator is an estimate for planning purposes only. It does not include lender fees, prepayment penalties, or credit-based rate variation, and it is not financial advice — confirm exact terms with your lender before signing.
