Golden hour is the warm, low-angle light shortly after sunrise and before sunset, roughly when the sun sits between -4° and 6° elevation. Blue hour follows, when the sun is between -6° and -4° below the horizon and the sky holds a deep blue glow.

These windows are calculated from your exact latitude, longitude, and date — they shift dramatically by season and get longer the farther you are from the equator.

Golden Hour vs. Blue Hour

Golden hour spans roughly from sunrise (or from 6° above the horizon before sunset) through about an hour after sunrise, and the mirrored window before sunset — when the sun’s low angle produces warm, directional, flattering light. Blue hour follows, when the sun sits between 4° and 6° below the horizon and the sky itself becomes the dominant light source, giving that deep saturated blue often used for cityscapes and architecture.

Why the Windows Change by Season and Latitude

Near the equator the sun rises and sets almost vertically, so these windows are short and consistent year-round. Farther from the equator, the sun crosses the horizon at a shallow angle, stretching golden and blue hour out — sometimes to 30 minutes or more each, and considerably longer near the solstices at high latitudes.
