Why Film Needs a Reciprocity Correction and Digital Doesn’t
Reciprocity describes the assumption that halving your shutter speed and doubling your aperture (or vice versa) always produces the same exposure. That holds for most everyday shutter speeds, but photographic film’s sensitivity to light drops off in a non-linear way once exposures stretch beyond about a second — a phenomenon called reciprocity failure. The result: a meter reading of “10 seconds” might actually need 15 or 20 seconds on film to render correctly. Digital sensors don’t have this problem in the same way, which is why this calculator is specifically for film shooters doing long exposures.
How the Correction Is Calculated
Manufacturers publish reciprocity data for their film stocks, often as tables, but many photographers use a simplified power-law approximation: corrected time equals the metered time raised to an exponent (p) specific to that stock. This calculator uses that approximation with published or commonly cited exponents for popular stocks — useful as a starting point, though real-world results can vary with temperature, development, and the specific batch of film.
Why the 1-Second Threshold
Reciprocity failure is generally considered negligible for exposures at or under 1 second, so no correction is applied below that threshold. Once you’re into multi-second, minute-long, or all-night exposures, the correction becomes significant — and compounds, since a longer corrected time also needs its own reciprocity accounting in stricter models (this tool uses the common single-pass approximation).
