A follow focus is a geared mechanism mounted to the side of a lens that lets a focus puller adjust focus by turning a knob rather than reaching in and twisting the lens barrel directly. It sounds like a small convenience, but it’s built around a real problem: cinema lenses need precise, repeatable, marked focus pulls during a take, and turning the lens barrel by hand doesn’t give the control, leverage, or consistency that requires. On a narrative set, focus is almost never pulled by touching the lens itself.
Why Not Just Turn the Lens
Autofocus isn’t reliable enough for narrative work, it can hunt, focus on the wrong subject, or fail to anticipate a planned move, so a dedicated human focus puller (the 1st AC) handles focus manually on most professional productions. Doing that by hand directly on the lens barrel gives poor leverage, no repeatable reference points, and makes it very hard to execute a smooth, precisely timed pull, especially with longer lenses or a lens whose focus throw is short and touchy. The 0.8 MOD Gear Standard
Cinema lenses have a geared focus ring built to a standardized pitch, almost universally 0.8 MOD (metric module), sometimes called 0.8 pitch, which is what lets a follow focus gear from one manufacturer mesh correctly with a lens from a completely different manufacturer. Photo and mirrorless lenses, which aren’t built with a geared ring at all, need a clip-on or wrap-around gear ring added to their focus barrel before a follow focus can grip them, matched to the same 0.8 MOD standard so the same follow focus unit works across both cine and adapted photo lenses.
Marking Discs and Witness Marks
A removable marking disc sits on the follow focus knob, and it’s where a 1st AC writes focus marks in grease pencil or tape, precise reference points tied to specific blocking positions rehearsed before a take. During the actual take, the puller watches the actor hit their mark (or a tape mark on the floor) and turns the knob to the matching focus mark, rather than judging focus by eye through a monitor. This is what makes a complex, moving focus pull repeatable take after take, since the marks don’t change even if the puller does.
Whips, Hard Stops, and Gear Ratios
A whip is a flexible cable extension that connects to the follow focus knob, letting a puller operate focus from several feet away, useful when the AC can’t stand right next to the lens, on a Steadicam rig, a gimbal, or a crane, for instance. Hard stops are adjustable physical limits set at the near and far ends of a lens’s focus travel, letting a puller find the end of the range by feel in the dark without looking. Follow focus units also ship with multiple gears of different tooth counts to match a given lens’s focus throw, a lens with a very short, touchy focus throw needs a different gear ratio than one with a long, gradual throw to keep the knob’s rotation manageable.
Manual Follow Focus vs Wireless FIZ
A manual follow focus, gear, knob, marking disc, is the simplest and most direct system, and it’s what most 1st ACs default to whenever they can physically stand next to the camera. Wireless FIZ (focus, iris, zoom) systems replace the direct mechanical link with a motor on the lens and a wireless handset the puller operates from a distance, necessary whenever the camera is somewhere the AC can’t be, a drone, a remote head, a car rig, without giving up precise, marked control over focus. FIZ systems are more expensive and more complex to rig, so manual follow focus remains the default whenever proximity to the camera is actually possible.
